Wally and Marion Paton welcomed thousands of visitors from around the world into their back yard for decades asking nothing in return. Children of the Depression, they grew up in an era of scarcity and self-sufficiency. The hardships of their early years evoked in each of them a strong work ethic, compassion, kindness, and a generosity of spirit that stayed with them throughout their entire lives. Instilled at an early age, these values would be the catalyst in transforming their yard into the world-renowned birding “mecca” that was known as Paton’s Birder Haven.
Here is the remarkable story of how this tiny piece of birding paradise came to be and how it was saved for future generations of birdwatchers, naturalists and conservationists.

[JOURNEY HOME is] “a lovely and well-illustrated book – beautifully and technically well written.” – George Fenwick, President of American Bird Conservancy
“Wow!! I knew the content would be great, but I wasn’t prepared for such a beautiful presentation. It’s really lovely and incredibly well done – a fantastic history book with so much care and life in it.”- Keith Ashley, Tucson Audubon Society
“Bonnie Paton Moon gives us a rich, detailed history of her family and their legacy in a new book, Journey Home – …. Moon writes an excellent abbreviated history of the town [Patagonia, AZ], tracing its roots in ranching and mining, acknowledging artists and writers along the way. Journey Home is a wonderful tribute to Wally and Marion Paton. It’s a delight to get to know the Patons through this book, with photos and quotes and the obvious love that Bonnie Paton brings to it.” – Ann Katzenbach, Patagonia Regional Times, December 2016
“… a fitting tribute to your wonderful, kind parents.” – Victor Emanual, Victor Emanual Nature Tours
